The wrong motives of giving

Acts 5:1-11

Introduction: All believers shared their possessions, there were no needy persons (4:32-34). Barnabas, with a right motive and attitude, sold his land and brought to the apostles' feet. Now, Ananias and Sapphira also did but with a wrong motive (5:1-11). What are the wrong motives here?

1. Hypocrisy. They pretended to be very religious, godly, generous, and superior; but inside their hearts and their lives, there is no truth, no godliness. It is very dangerous and a big disease in Christian life. We should be very honest. Let our "Yes" be yes and our "No" be no (Matt. 5:37).

2. Love of money. They could have given all their money, but because of the love of money, they are tempted to lie (the love of money is the root of evil. 1 Tim 6:10).Your heart is where your treasure is (Matt 6:21). Set your heart/mind on things above (Col.3:2).

3. Seeking self-glory. They seek credit, honor and praise for themselves. Let's give credit & glory to God when we do something. The Bible teaches to whatever we do, do it for the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31).

4. Lie. God is holy, He is the truth thus He cannot be mocked, and He cannot compromise with lie, because there is no lie in the truth. God cleansed the church so that the work of evil may not multiply, and the work of God might be revealed.

Therefore, let us be honest and faithful to God do everything for God's glory. Amen!
